InD'tale Magazine reviewed an early edition of Heaven's Door, a Novel in the July/August 2020 issue! InD'tale called it Four Stars Good and Five Kettles Steamy! "A heart-stopping tale of good versus evil."
"A brutally raw and riveting look at the inner workings of a fictional Canadian biker gang, Heaven’s Door by J. Kilburn comes in swinging and rarely stops...." (Self Publishing Review - 3.5 out of 4 stars!)

rules, J. Kilburn’s novel gets up close and personal with unpredictable and often
dangerous people... the world here is rich and full of compelling characters...." (Independent Book Review)
Calls it an "interesting, albeit violent tale...It’s not a story for the faint of heart. " (July/August 2020 Edition review by Alison Ellis)
Authentic! "Author J. Kilburn, where did you do your time?!" (Ed, a local reader)
"A six-hour reading marathon... I couldn't put it down!" (Pam, a Beta Reader)
Inspired by the Quebec Biker Wars that occured in the 1990's, as well as events that occurred in New England and Upstate New York over the last 40 years, this riveting biker fiction introduces the TOPDOGS Motorcycle Club, a fictional gang of modern-day outlaws who take us for a journey on the darker side of the road less traveled. (the first, "rough-draft" sketch of the fictional centerpatch at right)
Ride with undercover agents as they attempt to infiltrate and investigate the TOPDOGS club. Laugh, love, cry, live, and work with family members as they wait for their loved ones to return from undercover assignments...
Strut on the sidewalks of Montreal with high-rolling underworld magnates while their minions flit in and out of back alleys in service of dark needs, big money, and ruthless territorial competition. Read about how the Quebec Chapter of the club got its start; how some fun-seeking motorcycle enthusiasts lost themselves to the seductive, yet dangerous world of gang violence and organized crime.
Outlaw bikers: fun-loving club members or dangerous minions of criminal gangs? Directing the action, or merely swept up in events orchestrated by Organized Crime? Are the bikers themselves victims?
Honor, justice, reputation, adventure, thrills, camaraderie, good cooking, teamwork, liquor, intrigue: do these themes belong to the Outlaw Bikers, a team of law enforcement professionals, or are the two groups minted on a common coin? You decide!
More about the TOPDOGS club, its members and victims, and the law officers investigating the club coming in future books . Stay tuned to TOPDOGSNOVEL.COM.
Shocking, disturbing, and enlightening...
By its very nature, Heaven's Door, a Novel is a story about depraved behavior: violent crime, Hedonism, commercialized sex, street-gang culture. It's NOT a story about ponies and rainbows and daisy-filled glades. This is a story about a dark and gritty world that's just down the block and around the corner from where the rainbow touches down.
Heaven's Door, a Novel contains mayhem in the extreme - that is how a character comes to stand at that last and mysterious door. InD'tale Magazine has called the violence in the first book "grotesque."
There is also shocking behavior, disturbing content, misogyny, abuse. Am I proud of that? No. Does it accurately reflect the world of the characters, and the real-world events that inspired the story? Yes.
So I will pick up the pen or you will open the page and together we will visit an alien world that exists right within our midst. We will be horrified, cautioned, enlightened or fascinated, and maybe even entertained for a bit, and then we will leave those dark corners and dead ends of a criminal underworld to ascend back into the more familiar world with those characters who flit back and forth through both. We, writer and reader, will be grateful that we can turn the page to follow these lucky characters out the door and into the light of day.
Unlike many of the players on the dangerous stage in my crime/horror tale, readers can even put down the book for just a little while and re-enter the genteel world that is ours, hopefully to take a look around and more deeply appreciate those daisies.
In this case, real-life inspirations for the antagonists existed not too very far away. The Quebec Biker Wars featured rough and ready real outlaws, gang violence, drug involvement, murder, political indulgence, and even a successful jail break-out... events that were ready-made for adaptation into crime fiction.

The news article "Jan 15, 1996 - A BLOODY BIKER WAR." was published by and for citizens caught right in the teeth of this gang violence and gives a good "from the ground" perspective of the battle for control of the Montreal region's back-alley economy. The Feds call them "Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs." Other motorcyclists call them "Outlaw Clubs."
Some of them call themselves "One Percenters"
Some communities embrace them. Some jurisdictions actively prosecute them.
Who are the members? Find out...

Heaven's Door, a Novel was inspired partly by the Quebec Biker Wars. This violence between rival biker gangs eventually resulted in collateral damage - innocent civilians, including a child, were caught in the mayhem, injured, and killed.

The "Outlaw" clubs adopted a three-piece patch early in the evolution of club culture. Wear your centerpatch more or less as you wish. Display the separate top and bottom "ribbon rockers" proclaiming club /locality at your own peril... Those rockers have to be earned. The club that uses them must itself gain the credibility and reputation that allows them to be worn out on the road. Some clubs use display of the three-piece patch - and sometimes violence - to assert territorial dominance.
